Adrian was my first boss, taking a punt on me fresh off the management training scheme, as Traffic Manager Cricklewood in 1986. The lessons I learned in that job stayed with me throughout my career. When I last saw him for lunch earlier this year and I said I would be 60 soon, he looked at me in astonishment, “But you can’t be, you were one of my graduates!” The years passed but he stayed the same, always supportive and always challenging.
