Adrian died on December 13th, 2022 on his own terms, in Switzerland, after his body was ravaged by MND. Please support the wonderful MND Association with their vital research into this dreadful disease in memory of Adrian. You can leave your own memories of him here. He was a giant of a man who lived life to the full until the ravages of the disease became too much. Barbara, and the rest of the family are devastated. “To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.”

Thoughts

Adrian offered the exemplar of how to get the railways improved, and succeeded despite the difficulties often imposed by central government. He was probably the last of the great railwaymen, and a thoughtful and engaging person. He will be missed by many thousands of people.

Spoke to Adrian in summertime while enjoying his wonderful railway in his lovely garden Such a gentle man. He will be missed.

I started at Chiltern in 2004 and I stood in awe in Adrian’s office at Aylesbury as he welcomed me (and the others) into the railway family. I remained in awe for all the time he was at Chiltern’s helm. His guidance was readily available and always gratefully received. Even after he left Chiltern, I continued to remain in awe, and still do even now, of his achievements and, hopefully, I life well lived. Rest peacefully Adrian.

I am so glad that we commissioned two books from Adrian at Pen and Sword, his auto biography, Adrian Shooter A Life in Engineering and Railways and Chiltern Railways the Inside Story. I very much enjoyed working with Adrian on both projects and will miss him very much, also I will miss visiting the Beeches Railway and seeing the D & H R tank in action.
